Post subject:  Read First: State of Slick

Hey folks,

To those who are not yet aware, Slick is undergoing changes. Kevglass, the original author of Slick, is no longer maintaining the library. Some of us volunteered to keep slick alive, update bugs as they come along, and generally try to pack some more functionality into Slick. If you want to help contribute to Slick, you can pull source code, make changes, add Javadocs, and so forth using Bitbucket, which is the new repo for Slick:
https://bitbucket.org/kevglass/slick

You are also free to post ideas/suggestions in the development forums:
viewforum.php?f=26
viewforum.php?f=27

Currently the devs are working in the "development branch" on the repo to make changes and play around with new ideas. For information on getting the latest code, see this guide:

At some point soon, the website will be replaced, the development branch will be merged with the main branch, and Slick will be distributed as a binary download on the website.

Thanks for being patient; us devs are here as volunteers, after all.

:)

UPDATE: Liam is taking the reigns with the new website, which you can find here:
http://www.slick2d.org/

It's still a work in progress, but it's already looking good. It also contains a downloadable JAR if you'd rather not go through the process of pulling from Mercurial.

UPDATE 2: I am no longer maintaining Slick as I'm now working on contributing to . It's a very powerful library that doesn't have too steep a learning curve; I'd highly recommend it to those just getting started with Java game development.

Nice!! ;-) That's good news!

So far I'm a big fan of Slick.

My skills are not high enough to help with the Dev but I'll continue supporting the community as much as I can ;)

Great, I love slick and I am very happy to see that it's going to get better and better :-)

I'm a big fan of Slick as well, but I'm a little nervous about contributing to the project because I haven't done anything like that before. Glad to see development continuing :)

Very exciting stuff!

The only 2 thoughts I have is that

1) It may serve to pull in more developers if the repository were moved to git (github maybe? I know mercurial is similar, but we are old and grumpy and do not like change...)
2) Keep tight integration with Maven, maybe even see if Slick can get into the main maven repository and out of the http repository it currently lives in

I am looking forward to seeing the brilliant future of Slick.

Awesome news. I am just starting to get into Slick and I really like it so far.

Thanks a lot for keeping it alive.

Would a maven artifact also be in the cards for slick? Currently I'm pulling down an ancient version from the cokeandcode repo, but I'd love to keep it current, and now that lwjgl is in maven, it should be easy to get the dependencies straight.

If no one's stepping up, I can try maintaining the artifact in central, I'm just wondering if anyone else is already doing it?

Maven support would be awesome, I don't think anybody has done anything with it yet.

This is awesome :D I'm currently working on a space-strategy-ish game using Slick2D, and find working with it really pleasant. And it's really good to see some further improvement. So keep up the good work!

I'll see if I can suggest some improvements here and there, but I'm not too good at OpenGL to be really helpful I guess.

Would you recommend using the bitbucket version instead of the slick.zip on the site?
