I've tried using a normal JPG/PNG and it doesn't load it into the Tile set region. It just creates a new tab down there and nothing is there. When I try to load a PNG/JPG from the tutorial, it works?

What does the image have to have to show up?

png should work.

Are you talking about the Qt version of Tiled or the more stable java version?

Oh! I seem to remember that some art programs (inkscape) save their images in a funny way that didn't work in Tiled. I had to load them in TheGimp and save them as the file type I wanted.

I've never used the Qt version but I'm installing it now.

The QT version is stable and has been out for awhile. I use it for all my stuff.

I would not go for jpg for game development, it's more of a webformat, I guess compression might be a problem with tiled (especially if the tiles have different compression rates).
PNG is a indexed format and works more smooth with both Slick and probably Tiled as well, I always works with PNG 24bits, have had problems with PNG's that had less than 4 colors on it's indexed palette, It might be a bug with the png importer, but If you run into the same problem try saving it as a 24 bit image instead, that always worked for me, and I don't thing it makes any impact on size either.

In photoshop you save these files using "Export as Web Image" there you'll find a curtain menu where you can choose which format to save it to!

There is also paint.net - it works good for simple image editing.

irfanview is also an image viewer, but can read/save a ton of formats and good for converting.

Also, like the others have said; it's probably best to stay away from jpgs. I'd use png or bit maps.

The Stendhal guys also reported that some images were not loading correctly and that this resulted in an empty tileset view. The images that couldn't be used were saved by Photoshop and the problem could be solved by re-saving them using GIMP. Apparently Photoshop and libpng don't really agree on that PNG standard.

The Tiled Qt development version (so after 0.4.1) has some additional error handling in the New Tileset dialog, so that it will now tell you when the image could not be loaded, instead of adding an empty tileset to your map.
