If I am looking to use notepad++ as my ide of choice and not something like eclipse where do I need to put the slick2d files to be able to import them and use the classes, do they go somewhere in the JDK?

I strongly suggest you to use an IDE (Eclipse, NetBeans, IDEA, etc.. ) otherwise it's a mess: why use notepad++ when you can use a free ide like eclipse that makes work for you ?
