Hey Guys,

I'm currently working on a game using C++ and HGE for an engine, but have become increasingly frustrated with the quality of the development tools out there for C++ as compared to Java. As a result, I'm considering switching to Java and I'm looking at Slick as a possible replacement engine. It definitely looks like a good fit for what I'm trying to do and it has a lot of the nicer features that HGE also has, which should make porting the code easier.

While trying to investigate how feasible this would be, I was going through some of the WebStart demos earlier today, but I ran into problems when I went to launch Pedigree. The application launches fine, but the contents don't render properly - the display area flickers black, but then quickly goes back to gray. After this, the program will lock up if I try to interact with the file menu at all.

I'm fairly certain the issue I'm seeing is very similar to this one:

After reading that thread, I tried the CanvasTest demo and found that the same problem happened there. However, I have tried several other demos and they worked fine (DuplicateEmitter, ImageTest, Gradient, and GUITest).

Like the other person who was experiencing this problem, I'm running a Vista 32-bit laptop with a Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family for the graphics card. I would guess that the problem has something to do with that, but it does seem strange that some of the demos work. I went and updated the drivers for it, but that didn't have any effect.

As suggested in the other thread, I have tried running it in both Java 5 and Java 6, but haven't had any luck so far. Here is the console output for each:

Java 5:
Java Web Start 1.6.0_18

The only reason I think that this could potentially be different that the issue is that I'm not getting a stack trace in the console, but I'm also using a different build of Slick, so the lack of an error message could possibly be attributed to that. One line that caught my eye was where it said "TargetDisplayMode: 500 x 500 x 0 @0Hz". The 0Hz piece of that didn't look too promising; is that output typical?

Unfortunately, it'll be awfully tough for me to switch if I can't get Slick to run on my development machine, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dan
