I recently found Slick from a friend of mine who suggested I use it as it's more user friendly than jumping into the deep end of using JOGL/OpenGL ;p
So my idea for Minethon was to create a 2d world where you mine deep down until you meet the devil, along the way you find minerals, rocks, treasures, ancient relics. You can then trade these in on the surface to buy upgrades, temporary boosts, and some mining equipment like tnt or dynamite sticks.
Once you've made it to the devils area you cannot return to the surface until you defeat the devil and thus complete the game's main core, but hey you can still mine and get the best score

I am in the stages of making the level/map randomly generate so you wont always have the same level/map.
