As already mentioned in some other thread it seems to be okay if we switch the Slick project over to JDK 6 as the default JDK. If noone disagrees I would change that for the development branch.

Yes, I'm all for it. This would also mean we could change a lot generics stuff too :o

You missed changing the ant build file.
I did this in my fork that is not pending to be pulled.

Just curious, I know Slick was using Java 1.4, but what benefits does Java 6 provide Slick over using Java 5?

Java 5 has mostly all the same benefits (language changes wise) but works on more systems. LWJGL has a minimum requirement of Java 5 too, so might be an idea to have the same minimum Java requirements.

Yeah I agree -- I think Java 5 has some significant benefits (generics, enums, etc) but I don't see the need for Java 6.

The only thing at the code side of Java that is note worthy in my opinion is the ability to define custom annotations and process them.
But I am unsure if there is any good way to use those in Slick. At least I can't think of any.

There is another question: Whats the harm in Java 6? Version 5 is declared dead since 3 years. Are there any target environments that are actually limited to Java 5?

Annotations are quit useful, think of supressing warning or parsing something and make flexible (EJB e.g.)

Before switching to JDK 6 I asked in thread if it is okay to switch to JDK 6 or just move to JDK 5.

All answers voted for JDK 6 (although there weren't many answers).

We are still on the development branch so we have all choices - I would just love to find a JDK that is not 1.4 and satisfies most people

Yes I do know that :D I was just saying what benefits we could take from it xD I'm okay with 1.5... I don't know if anyone who plays games does not have 1.6 (kappa's statistics don't include that fact right?) :)

So should we switch to JDK 5 to satisfy the maximum of users? Seems all are fine with it, the most important features are already in JDK 5 and we're on the same level as LWJGL.
